Hey look who is hosting T-SQL Tuesday, it is me, and I’m late. Sorry I broke my demo machines for Linux and had to set up everything again so I change my topic and that is going to make it brief.
One of my favorite things about SQL on Linux is it how it is to get your hands on play with it. One it has a docker image you can pull that gives you instant access to it. Two you can install it at the command line in Linux once you set up your repository with one line, then to update to the latest version it just as easy. No more download large iso files and wondering your way through setup screens to get your hands on the newest version to see what it does. It’s time to get comfortable with containers and be to pull an image down and play with it in minutes and not worry about your operating system. Oh, and did I mention we have a one-liner to rollback to a previous version (how many times have you been able to do that one Windows). Check out Microsoft’s guide for installing SQL on Linux here. Check out the post here for the command to pull the docker image.
With the ease of installing SQL on Linux and being able to pull a container down, why would you not at least develop against it and use it for demos? Then you get it production ready later because you have already seen who easy it to use. So now you have no excuses to now go and play with it, you don’t even have to know anything about the operating system to get started.
