Edit: See end of blog for solution.
I have MS Visual Studio 2008 (BIDS) x86 with SP1. Recently it’s started shutting down without warning whenever I hit “preview” on a SSRS report. Google hasn’t helped, and I didn’t get much love on #sqlhelp (the Twitter hashtag for SQL help), so I thought I’d ask my adoring public: WTH??
This problem DOES NOT appear to be limited to a particular solution, nor to a particular report. However, I have narrowed it down to only reports that use parameters.
If and when I find a resolution, I’ll post it here for posterity and for all time.

Solution: Well, that was fast. I posted this before trying my very-last-ditch effort, which was to uninstall Redgate’s SQL Prompt 5. Sure enough, this was the problem. Here’s a Redgate forum conversation that describes the same behavior. I’ll reinstall and apply the fix mentioned, and update here to let you know if that works.
