It’s time for Meme Monday again, and this month’s theme is #SQLFamily. One of the overwhelming themes of this year’s SQL PASS Summit was community. And that’s what most people mean when they talk about SQL family. When you talk about family, scope is important. There are multiple levels of any family, SQL or otherwise. Immediate family … extended family … distant family … your third cousin on your mother’s side twice removed.

When I think of SQL family, my thoughts immediately go to #SQLNomz. Here in the Seattle/Redmond area of Washington State, many of us in the SQL community try to get together semi-regularly. We may have lunch, dinner, drinks, whatever. Often it may preceed the Pacific Northwest SQL Server user Group (a.k.a. #pnwsqL) meeting, or it may coincide with a distant SQL family member being in town for a visit. There are so many of us SQL family members living and working here in Microsoft’s shadow, that it is extremely difficult to corrdinate because we can’t fit everyones’ Twitter handles in the 140 character limit of a tweet. So we created the #SQLNomz hash tag.
I don’t remember who coined the hash tag #SQLNomz, but the first person I heard use it was Argenis Fernandez (blog|@DBArgenis). #SQLNomz is open to everyone. No invitation required (and none will be sent). If you’re in the area, either visiting or living/working, just watch the hash tag on Twitter and show up. Everyone who comes in is #SQLFamily.
We’re planning to meet twice this week. We’re meeting on Wednesday before the #pnwsql meeting as one of our own will be presenting. And we’re meeting on Friday when a member of our distant SQL family will be visiting: Amit Banerjee (blog|@banerjeeamit).
