Over the last year, I was presenting and touring the SQL Saturday circuit with my HealthySQL 2.0 presentation.  HealthySQL is my campaign to raise awareness in the greater SQL Server Community for the need for regular performance and security health checks, and to maintain a healthy SQL Server environment for your entire infrastructure.

The session included most of the “W’s” of why, what, when, where and how to perform a health check.  I paralleled the campaign on the topic everyone was talking about in the US, was national health care, affectionately, or unaffectionately known as ObamaCare.  But of course, I steer clear of any discussion of national politics, except for an initial Jay Leno (who’s that 😉 type zinger slide of the evolution of the health care rollout.

Then I transition into the need for regular SQL Checkups, including what could happen if you don’t perform them, and all efforts to save the patient, uh, your SQL Server from ending up in the ER.

The meet of the session is to introduce you, the DBA, or whomever you are in the role of managing and maintaining your SQL Servers, how to do a performance audit (basically what a health check is), what measures and stats to capture, checklists, documentation, scripts, etc.  All things to help automate, baseline, document and trend your servers’ performance into some awesome SQL reports for your management.  We leverage the native tools out of the box for SQL Server, including DMVs, extended events (XEs), and other tools that are out there to assist.
