December Question: What does it mean to be a Proactive DBA?

,

One of the things I promote in all my presentations is the importance of being a proactive DBA. Unfortunately, the term “proactive” is open to many different interpretations. So, this month’s question is, “What does it mean to be a Proactive DBA”? In other words, what tasks does a DBA take in order to be proactive? When you respond to this question, try to list all of the things a typical DBA might do that help him or her to be proactive in preventing performance problems or downtime. By sharing your ideas of what a proactive DBA does, we can all learn from one another.

Post your responses to the above SQL Server Question of the Month in the comments section below (at www.bradmcgehee.com if you are viewing this from a syndicated newsfeed). And don’t forget to enter your e-mail address when you post your response, so I can contact you if you win.

Because there is no right or wrong answer, this month’s winner will be selected randomly from all the entries that are received.
