Thursday night I had a great time presenting my session entitled “Squeezing Top Performance from Your Virtualized SQL Server” to the Chicago SQL Server Users Group. Because of all of the great questions and conversation during the session, the session ran over two full hours!
Abstract: Just about anyone can click through a SQL Server installation and get it working, but more than a little tuning is required to get the most performance out of your servers. Once virtualized, additional tuning can help get even more performance out of that virtual machine. We will discuss valuable details for both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V on how to tweak and tune your virtual infrastructure for business-critical virtualized SQL Servers. Tips on configuring your SQL Server installations for maximum performance when virtualized will be covered. We will also present tips on monitoring and capacity management so you know when you need to add more hardware to keep your database servers running at their peak performance.
I really enjoy this group. The people are great, the questions and feedback are excellent, and the comradery is outstanding! I cannot wait to get back for either another SSUG meeting or the next Chicago SQL Saturday next year.

I cannot wait to get back to this incredible town. While I was here, I finally made it to the famous Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. I have been to the city a number of times but never had the opportunity to see this museum. If you have never been there, GO at your earliest convenience. It is amazing!
