Session 1 – Core Monitoring for SQL Server, Grant Fritchey
Good DBAs ensure they're always aware of the state of their instances. All systems should have monitoring in place, not just so you know when things go wrong, but so you understand what a normal workload looks like and can plan for the future. This session will cover best practices for monitoring a SQL Server system, key metrics you should be tracking, and how you can monitor for your specific business needs using Red Gate's SQL Monitor.
Break 1 ~ Demo with refreshments ~
Session 2 – Common Problems in Backup and Recovery and How to Handle Them, Steve Jones
The basic concepts behind taking a backup are well understood, but people are frequently surprised by the many ways backups can go wrong. First, we'll explore the most common problems around SQL Server backup and recovery, so that you can spot any issues in your own environment. Then, we'll talk about how to prevent these issues in the first place. The foundation of disaster recovery is having a verified backup in place, so the knowledge you'll gain from this session could help to save your business.
Break 2 ~ Discussions and demos with refreshments ~
Session 3 – Improve Query Performance by Fixing Bad Parameter Sniffing, Grant Fritchey
Parameter sniffing is a misunderstood issue on SQL Server. Most of the time, parameter sniffing is helping performance on your servers. But sometimes, circumstances change, and what was helping you is now hurting you – bad. In this session, we’ll gain an understanding of what exactly parameter sniffing is and why it’s usually so helpful. Then we’ll explore how parameter sniffing can go wrong and look at seven different ways you can deal with it when it does. You’ll take away a wealth of knowledge that will help you identify and resolve bad parameter sniffing in your own environment.
4.30PM – 5.30PM ~ Q & A, Happy hour & continued chat with Steve Jones and the Red Gaters (Drinks on Red Gate) ~
