HI FOLKS....
I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO FIND SOMEONE HERE THAT CAN HELP ME. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A WINDOWS 7 LAPTOP AND I HQVE BEEN TRYING TO DOWNLOAD PRIMAVERA P6 TO MY LAPTOP BUT IT'S COMING UP WITH THE MESSAGE-----'' SQL DATABASE INCOMPATIBLE'' THEN AT THE END HAS AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS CONNECTION UNSUCCESSFUL....
CAN ANYONE ADVISE ME ON THE STEPS I NEED TO TAKE TO GET THIS P6 TO DOWNLOAD ON MY WINDO'S 7.... THANKS..

I'm assuming you've already downloaded a Primavera installer and encounter the error message when you're in the process of installing it?
It's likely that either;
You want a standalone version on your laptop, and you probably need SQL Express installed first to host the database component (assuming it's not part of the installer)
OR;
You're using the wrong version of the installer (probably not operating system compatible, rather than SQL).
The info you gave isn't really enough to go on to give you a definite answer though, so we'll need to know a bit more about what you're actually doing.
i.e. is it an upgrade?
Is there an existing database?
What version is it? (*is it even SQL Server if so?)
What part of the installation gives you the errors?
etc etc etc

Hi,
Thanks for getting back. I will try and give you as much information as possible.. I have got a Windows 7 Home premuim laptop and a primavera p6 software.. I tried downloading the software in standalone mode.. it takes me through the normal procedures then it tries connecting with the Sql server database...(i am assuming the Sql server of the computer). then a message pops up'' sql server not compatible with the software'' and gives me the option of checking for possible solutions on line.. which came back as having no info.. the download continues after that to the very end...which you are supposed to get a ''connection successful''... but i get an error message saying ''connection failed---Error FFFF''
Am not particularly sure if i wil need to get an sql server/database compatible with this particular software as it installed quite easily in standalone mode with a friend that has a windows XP.. if so... would i have to unistall all servers on my Windows 7 before installing an ''XP like server''. Sorry i can't really help you with all the technical terms but i hope you understand what i am trying to say..
reply to you questions
is it an upgrade? NO... Standalone download of p6
Is there an existing database? I assume what came with the laptop itself
What version is it? (*is it even SQL Server if so?).. Not sure...should be sql that comes with Windows 7..
What part of the installation gives you the errors?.. connecting with the sql server of my windows 7.... seems to work in XP n Vista..
Cheers.... looking forward to reading your feed back....

Okay, basically what you're actually doing is in 2 separate parts.
1. You need a database host running on your PC.
2. You need the Primavera v6 application installed on your PC which then connects to it's own database which will be running on SQL Express..
I would recommend running SQL Express to host the database part, and SQL Express 2008 R2 is both compatible with Windows 7 and Primavera v6, and free, so it is ideal for what you need.
http://www.microsoft.com/express/database/
**You'll either need the 32 bit or the 64 bit version depending on your PC (Whether it is running a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system).
Download and install SQL Express first.
When it comes to installing Primavera v6, I can't picture the installer off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure it has the option to run a "Custom" installation instead of standard or default options.
The main thing is to ignore the SQL application part, but to make sure the actual database is installed (a file). You'll then have the database server and the Primavera software installed on your PC and that's half the battle...
It is a bit more difficult to run you through the next part without going through dozens of possible scenarios/steps depending on what you do with the installation, but if you get that far feel free to reply here and I'll get back to you as soon as I can (or someone else probably will be able to talk through "attaching a database" in SQL Express)...
🙂

It's better to follow the custom installation if you know exactly what parts you need and where you need to put them, but in this case, the version of SQL Express (I assume) which is packaged up with the installer, is not compatible with the version of Windows you're using, so you'll basically need to replace it.
You shouldn't need any other SQL tools installed once you've installed the software from the link I gave earlier, and you should manage to get Primavera installed if you can bypass the part where the package looks to install its own SQL tools.
As before, please feel to post back any comments and I'll try and help you through them 🙂

after p6 & sql installation, once I specify the host and the database, the program autofills the user & password (e.g. pmdb & *****). What's password? where it has come from? and is there a way to change it?
pls advise. I am new to sql server system.
thanks in advance!

I think the default username and password are;
U: privuser
P: privuser
Try that, otherwise, maybe pubuser/pubuser.
If that doesn't work, you may need to look at ways of resetting the password.

Thanks for the advice. I have the same problem. As you said I installed both P6 & SQL. Kindly let me know how to configure the database. Where can I find the hostname, database name. Its returning a message " bad public ...."
Thanks.

An old thread, but I am experiencing the same problem when moving my P6.1 from a Windows 7 32bit computer (runs fine) to a new Windows 7 64bit computer. Have tried different versions of SQL to no avail.
Is your guide still available, and if so, how may retrieve it?
Thanks
