We are a Sql server shop with no "official" data modeler product (unless you regard VISIO as that product); . Sometimes our DBA creates the models; sometimes the developers; but almost everyone needs to view them! We are looking for a product that meets most of these "bread and butter" requirements. What can you recommend?
TIA,
BD
1. Product has a "modest" learning curve which can be picked up again easily if the product is not used daily.
2. Supports Reverse Engineering
3. Supports Conceptual, Logical, and Physical modeling.
4. Supports Forward Engineer database
5. Supports simultaneous development against same model
6. Supports versioning of data models including ability to rollback in case of issues. Ability to "deploy" scripts to different environments also nice.
7. Supports an "Enterprise" data dictionary -- critical
8. Offers help understanding complex models (e.g. click on a relationship and highlights the fields involved or lets us use hyperlinks to hide model complexity, then drill-down in more details as needed)
9. Supports BI (star\snowflake) modeling as well as OLTP modeling
10. Supports exporting of model to many formats (e.g. html, pdf) for viewing by those not having the client tools.

Personally, I have been using Enterprise Architect (from Sparx Systems). It can do most of what you are after. I haven't attempted to version objects in it as yet but I think that it can be done. If you use the Corporate Edition, you can use a shared repository (e.g. a SQL Server database) and everyone can use it. It does detect multiple people changing the same object/table.
The Corporate Edition costs approx. $US240 - which is pretty good value compared to some of its competitors. There is also a read-only version of the product that is free
There are a number of other products out there that will also do what you are after - I am sure that someone else will reply about those.
