what is the point of twitter?

  • i've been using it on and off for a few months and the latest person i'm following is Brian Kelly. Mostly it seems like a way for the big bloggers and book authors to promote themselves.

    other than i can't figure out how they even bring in revenue much less earn any money is or if they will be around in 2 years is there a point to it? maybe i'm too old

  • I don't know how twitter brings in money. I know that for me it allows an interaction similar to IM. For me it isn't about self promotion. Among the folks I follow, I haven't sensed that, either. I've seen questions asked and responded to, I've seen events and links that would be of interest to folks with similar career paths, and I've also seen some of the personal side of folks, which is great. For instance, this came out via Twitter:

    This geek is asking for help...

    It's just another way to connect to folks who work in the same field or who share the same interests. BTW, if you're just relying on the web interface, it's not that great. I've moved on to Witty and then to TweetDeck, which I like a lot.

  • I'm still trying to figure out the point of IM'ing! :w00t:

    It makes about as much sense to me as getting a DSL/Cable/Fiber service and then trying to run my old 9600 baud modem through it. 😛

  • IMing is great for short, quick asynch communications. Especially when folks are working on several things or are away from their desk. When it used to be allowed where I worked, we'd use it to ask coding questions or shoot code samples back and forth for others to look at before we put it in. Twitter only allows for 140 chars per message, so code review won't work, plus, it's posted private unless you use Direct Message, but it's still an asynchronous communications medium.

  • And to put it back to BBS era (I was a SysOp for Wildcat!, Spitfire, and T.A.G. as well as a doors and door utility [think conversion of the various BBS drop files] shareware programmer back in the day). It's like posting on message boards on a multi-line BBS where folks are responding in near real time.

  • we have a corporate IM system here and i make a point not to use it because there is always that 1% of the user base that wants to call you on the phone or IM you and interrupt you because they think they take priority

  • But that's, to use a cliche, throwing the baby out with the bath water. For that 1% who are abusive, the first time, put 'em on notice. Make it very clear that you'll check it when you're in between tasks. If they have a real emergency, that's what your manager is for... to be informed so he/she can decide whether or not to re-prioritize you. 🙂

  • I use it here and there. I'll ping friends for a quick conversation or to ask a question. We sometimes set up times to meet for lunch and IM is quicker than the phone, and less of an interruption if we're both working.

    My wife and I use it sometimes when we're traveling. We can have a conversation that's quicker than email, and it doesn't interrupt us when we're doing something else. Easier to IM for 1 minute then try to get a phone call through.

    Twitter? Not sure. I've given it a few months, not sure what the value is or if I like it, but someone asked me to give it a few more months, so I'll re-evaluate it then.

    not saying it's not useful

    a lot of our people use it especially on trouble calls with customers. if they find a mistake they can IM each other, fix it and make themselves look good. i've used it for a little while and stopped. even had management bugging me about things that could have been emailed.

    a lot of websites use LivePerson or something like that to do the chat thing if you have questions about something.
