At one point Brad McGehee said about who might not want to consider certification. One of the point was
You are one of those rare DBAs who don't need any motivation to learn and can do it on your own, and you are so confident in your skills that you don't need to show them off to anyone by becoming certified.
In my experience, DBAs who fall into the latter category tend to be a little arrogant, which is not a good trait for an Exceptional DBA. Having faith in your own ability is fine, but don't let this slip into arrogance or complacency, or you may find it a little harder to find or keep a job as a DBA.
I disagreed with him. Many DBAs could motivate to learn things on their own but it did not mean they were arrogant. They might just think learning was part of their job and it did not need certification to prove what they know or what they don't know. On the other hand, some people who got certification might be the one who were arrogant that they showed off their certification by putting in it in their business card and told people they were the expert of SQL Server.

I think it's a tendency that Brad is mentioning. There are plenty of people that start to get arrogant at a point when they have a lot of knowledge.

I've actually been told by my manager that I come across as arrogant. I don't mean to be, but there are certain things that I do feel strongly about when it comes to my job and its responsibilities.
I have also been told that I am strong in my technological knowledge, I just haven't had the time to take the certification tests, even though I would like to.

Brad Magahee, SQL Server MVP, the guy in the ads up top.
He wrote an article for Simple-Talk (has done a couple editorials here as well) that we linked to.

I try my hardest to be arrogant, but just can't seem to get it right! π

Itβs not arrogant if you can back it up.
However, there are plenty of people that are arrogant that canβt back it up. An arrogant attitude is often a cover for ignorance and incompetence.

No, actually, it is arrogant if you can back it up. If you can not back it up, then it is pretentious (or presumptuous, or ignorant, or pathetic, or just plain "being a stupid j*ck*ss"). π

Tend to agree with Mr. Young on this one. You can be right, know it, and be arrogant.
Professional would be doing it, knowing it, using it when needed without making an explicit point of letting others know it.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I have trouble with arrogance because I keep overshooting straight into hubris. (Yeah, I'll let you look that one up before you reply.) π
