add a third node on a cluster

  • Environment:

MSCS Cluster - 2 server with windows server 2003 Ent. Edition - sp2

    sql server 2000 enterprise edition - sp4

We need to rebuild our cluster, don't ask me why because it's a long story....

We have a third server available and we would like to install a third node for the cluster, install SQL Server 2000 on it and then rebuild the old nodes, one node at a time.

I am searching for a white paper, instruction, step by step procedure and so on.

On the actual cluster there is only one instance installed which is hosted by node1.

Could you please point me in the right direction?

Thank you very much for your time and support.

    Kind regards.

  • SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition only supports 2 cluster nodes.

So what you try to do is not possible.

  • From Microsoft:

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition support up to four nodes for failover clustering, including an Active/Active/Active/Active failover clustering configuration, up to 16 total instances. This means SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition are not supported on a cluster with more than four nodes even if SQL Server 2000 is not installed on more than four of the nodes.

  • Hmm,

I always thought that more than 3 nodes was introduced with SQL 2005, but on the other hand I think that was related to Windows 2000 which came out at about the same time.

Anyway this is what BOl says about adding another node:

    Good luck
