- SQL2000 sp4 (cluster ! ) on Windows 2003 32-bit.
Automatic updates enabled
With "reboot needed" message pending when logon to the console.
symptomes:
SQLAgent jobs tend to be hanging for hours (3-5) for jobs that normally complete in 20 minutes.
Action:
stop sqlagent OK
Start SQLAgent causes cluster to failover.
Failover does not succeed because of this
Message "sqlmangr.exe looking for MSVCR71.dll ... try to reinstall ..."
We copied MSVCR71.dll and msvcp71.dll from another server and now things seem to be working again.
Can MS08_040 cause this issue ??

We encountered the same issue today after installing a new version of TSM client software which required a reboot. We have been running SQL 2000 - 8.00.2039 for over a year without this issue so it may not be related to the SP itself.
We do NOT have automatic Win2k3 updates enabled but have applied updates within the past 4 weeks and have rebooted the machine more than twice since the updates were applied.
Post SP4 hotfixes (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=894905) does not mention the issue.
Sorry not much help.

Thank you for the feedback.
We still haven't found the cause of this incident.
We do have a number of servers with sql2000 on it, this is the only cluster that suffered it.
Up until now it runs just fine.

Thanks ALZDBA!
I encountered the same issue this morning. After loading the msvcr71 and msvcp71 libraries to the system32 directory, I was finally able to finish the reinstall (I tried following the advice of the error message and uninstalled SQL 2000 to turn around a do a fresh installation - which subsequently failed until copying these files into the system32 directory).
I am going to initiate a restore of the databases from last nights backup so I hope to be up and running again shortly.
Just wanted to thank you.

I'm glad it could be of use to you.
We haven't encountered the issue on any other servers (yet) and still don't know what caused the files to be missing.
