Hi,
I have set up a Multi-Instance Sql 2000 Ent cluster on Win2k3 Ent and I have not been able to name the instance as I would expect. Details are:
Node 1 server name: asl-sql-a
Node 2 server name: asl-sql-b
Virtual node name (default instance): asl-vsql
The problem arises when I attempt to install the second instance, which of course is a named instance. I would have expected to be prompted for the instance name, as I would be if it was on a stand alone server, but it also asks me for a server name. If I enter the existing virtual name of asl-vsql, it only gives me the option to uninstall the default instance. Only if I give it a different name will it allow me to install the second instance. But this forces me to have a named instance of asl-vsql-sec\sec instead of my desired name of asl-vsql\sec :-s.
Can anyone tell me if this is by design, or am I missing something?
Many thanks in advance,
Martin

It's been a while since I used a similar situation but I believe you will have 2 virtual SQL server names and one virtual cluster name. In our case we used something like OLTPI1 and OLTPI2 for our virtual SQL servers and then OLTPSQLC for the virtual cluster name. So the instances would be something like OLTPI1\instance1 and OLTPI2\instance2.
Did you name the first instance? Do you have more than one virtual server name? Take a look at this link. It might help:

Many Thanks for your reply, Chris. It looks like I will have to put up with a naming convention which, to me in any case, is illogical.
