Database per client vs consolidated database

  • The company I work for services a number of large corporate clients - we currently maintain each client's data in a separate SQL server database.  There are a number of benefits to this configuration but the origanization would like to evaluate the concept of merging all clients back to one consolidated database.  As part of the review, mgmt would like to see case studies involving in-depth evals other compaines have done to compare the separate vs consolidated architecture.

Is anyone aware of any good case studies on the subject?

    Thanks,

    Harley

  • Don't know of any case studies, but it becomes much harder to scale out, be fault tolerant for some clients, etc. if they are combined. Definitely lowers admin if you work on one db v 100.
