Oracle training

  • Does anyone have some recommendations for Oracle training and/or resources?  My company recently purchased a large application which includes several Oracle database servers, and I will be tasked with extracting BI data from these systems, as well as some of the day-to-day DBA tasks on these machines.  I worked with Oracle a little bit in college, but it was several versions ago and I fear that I have forgotten most of it anyway.

So, if anyone knows of some good training/books/websites that can help a SQL Server guy learn a little about Oracle, let me know.  Any help is appreciated.

  • I have two very good resources for Oracle one on the Algebra end and the other on the Calculus end read up their blogs and published articles and swing by the Oracle version of SQLServerCentral forums.  You will also need either Toad for DBA or Embarcadero both are expensive but worth the money see if your employer will pay for it. Rittman the guy on the Calculus end replies emails a whileback I contacted him in 2005 and he got back to me, the first link click on articles and there is also a downloadable PL/SQL tutorial.  Hope this helps.

  • Tim,

It's been a while since I worked with Oracle and the formal training I got was from the company's Oracle Education division (http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=3&p_org_id=1001&lang=US) .  I've gotten excellent SQL Server training from SQL Soft+ (http://www.sqlsoft.com/) and they offer Oracle training.  Their training centers are on the west coast.

I'd recommend an overview of Oracle architecture, since it's different from

SQL Server, and at least one of their Administration courses.

As for books, I liked Oracle DBA Handbook and Oracle DBA Survival Guide.

  • Good luck!

Join the club!  Since my company went through a merger, I have been placed on the Oracle team to learn Oracle and also teach them (supposedly!) SQL Server.

The oracle website is pretty good.  Hopefully going on workshop training soon although the manager wants to cut a corner or two and send me to the 2nd course and make me skip the 1st one...Could be fun!

  • Talk to the folks at TUSC (http://www.tusc.com) they provide training to Oracle themselves and are partners. I've taken the Admin and Perf Tuning classes. My training was in Chicago, the instructors and facilities were great. Very much a hands on course, small class sizes as well.

  • Learning Tree International (http://www.learningtree.com) is great.  I've had training from Oracle and from Learning Tree.  Learning Tree was MUCH better AND less expensive!

  • Simply go onto Oracle's website and look for training. Oracle University. Look for the class you want and find a city ... they offer training in almost all Metro areas in the US. I have taken two classes are I am the main SServer DBA and since we got Oracle I am becoming an Oracle dba as well. Oracle U. is pretty good. The only knock is that each training center uses different operating systems, so, if you are unfamiliar with say UNIX and that is what the training center they run on uses you will be at a disadvantage.

  • Surely the fitst thing is do a module in PL/SQL?  If your are good with T-SQL you should sail tyhrough it, but unless you get your head around this syntax first you will be continually pushing snow uphill!
