Can I install SQL Server Ent. Edition on top of Std. Edition ?

  • I have a SQL Server box running Windows 2000 Advanced Server sp4 with SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. Can I upgrade to Enterprise Edition directly ? or do I have to unsinstall the Std. Edition and reinstall Ent. Edition ? Please help...Thanks.

  • In theory you could upgrade.

Don't forget to make logins script and backups of your DBs in case of a some misunderstanding

  • Upgrade path is very simple. I did this on 8 production servers  - with a reboot (not required - biut I did just to make sure) and then reapplied SP3a and reboot (just to be sure).

  • Thank you so much for the reply.

Athur, after your upgrade, did you have any problem with logins ?

    Thanks again,

  • I did upgrade to enterprise edition on a server, the setup has an upgrade option. Now I am trying to do the same upgrade on another server but the upgrade option is grayed out? Any info on this would be highly appreciated. Its win2k3 - sql2k standard sp4. My SQL Setup cd will drop it back to sp2 so I planed to apply sp4 after update. Now I am thinking I need a setup cd that installs to sp4 level for the upgrade option to be available.

  • We're going to upgrade our production box from Standard to Enterprise as well.  If anyone has any suggestions or "gotchas" to pass along, that would be much appreciated.
