SQL file encryption

  • What is the best method for encrypting the physical files of the database at the OS level.  Config:  SQL 2000, Win2K SP4, NTFS.

I am aware of Windows EFS, but have not been able to find suitable instruction on restoration/recovery.  In addition, needed is encryption that can span multiple machines as DoubleTake is being used for replication.

  • Windows EFS is the only fully Microsoft supported solution that I am aware of. Basically, recovery is the same as with any deployed EFS solution. You won't find anything specific to SQL Server because so far as the OS is concerned, a SQL Server database file is the same as any other file (albeit one that stays open).
