sql mail/domain help

  • hello,

I've successfully setup sql mail before, but I've come across a new problem and I am hoping someone might be able to help shed some light on this for me:

I have a few test and staging sql servers that reside on different domains than my exchange server.

I can't seem to figure out a way to setup sql mail on these servers. Is there a good way to do this? I figure I could setup exchange on the other 2 domains as well but that seems excessive to me. Hope I explained this ok, and thank you in advance!

  • What is relationship between domains where Exchange server and SQL Server location? If they arr not trusted, you can not setup exchange client on SQL box and then SQL mail won't work. If network policy does not allow the trust, you may ask there any smtp server that you can use, and you can config sql box mail client to use smtp server.

  • Once the trust is set up, just install SQL Server and set up your profile like normal.  I've done this on 3 servers and it works fine.  If your Exchange server is in Domain1 and the account you normally use is NTaccount then just install SQL Server on the new domain server using Domain1\NTaccount.  It all depends on the trust relationship though.

  • thanks a lot you two! I will look into the trust relationship and see what I can do. I know that sql has already been installed but I am almost certain i can change the admin account to the exchange domain at this point anyway.

If not, I was thinking of setting up smtp on IIS on the second domain in lieu of another exchange box. i figure this would suffice for testing but i'd rather try your way first.
