SQL Agent Mail - Profile Question

  • I am reviewing various server configurations and noticed one server has SQL Mail configured, but SQL Agent Mail has no profile configure.  However, I am able to open an Operator and send a Test alert to the Operator.  How is this possible if SQL Agent Mail has no assigned mail profile?

  • See BOL - search for SQL Mail. Here's a quick quote:

SQL Server uses two services to handle mail. MSSQLServer processes mail for all of the mail stored procedures. SQLServerAgent does not use SQL Mail to send e-mail. Instead, SQLServerAgent uses its own mail capabilities that are configured and operated separately from SQL Mail.

The systems fine with no users loggged in. Can we keep it that way ?br>

  • DB,

I've read all the BOL info.  From what I understand you still need to configure a profile regardless of whether it's SQL Mail or SQL Agent Mail.  They don't need to use the same profile, but I believe one is still required.

I suspect what I am seeing is a bug.  If I click on the drop-down, choose a profile, click Apply, OK and then go back into Properties, the Mail Profile is missing.  I'm guessing the profile has been applied, but EM is not displaying the profile.

    Thanks,  Dave
