Problems backing out SP4

  • I just tried to backout SP4 on a Windows 2003 machine.  When I re-installed SQL Server and then installed SP3 I get the following error when trying to bring up EM.  Has anyone had this problem, and how can I resolve it?

    snap-in failed to initialize.  name microsoft sql enterprise manager clsid:{00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F}

  • If you continue to have that problem it is probably best to rebuild your server.

  • That is exactly what I plan to do.  Just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

  • Greg,

Try registering sqldmo.dll from the reinstalled binary directory. see if that does anything.

    Good Luck  jg

  • SQLDMO.DLL doesn't get registered under that CLSID.  At least not on my system.  I don't have any entry in th e registry for the CLSID when Opening Enterprise Manager that errors.

Can someone check what dll is registered in the registry for HKCR\CLSID\00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F.

    Thanks,

    Randy

  • I have SQLMMC.DLL in that location.

  • Greg,

I have Enterprise Manager for this Classs ID and then right next to it with a little bit different first numbers as 00100106  or 00100110 are parts of EM like About box, Private Content, DTS stuff etc.

Did you try to re-install Client Tools? That is after you say you already re-installed your server.

I do have a  similar message for Computer Management for one of my Windows 2003 servers. When I start Computer Management there is a message that snap-in failed to initialize for Volume Management Extension and class id for this snap in. I click ok and Computer Management comes up with other tools that should be there.

  • I don't get an option to just install Client Tools when inserting the SQL Server 2000 disk.  Is it to do so?

Autorun menu comes up with selections of

SQL Server Components which lists when selected:

    Install Database Server

    Install Analysis Tools

    Install English Query

I don't see a selection to install Client Tools under any of the other items in the setup application.

Are CLSID's assigned the same for all installations or are they Random.  If random how do you find what the Enterprise Manager is trying to startup and gets the snap-in initiailization failed pop-up error on startup?

  • The client tools only option is on the second screen after you pick install database server

  • I see it now.  Just had to select Install Database Server, that then asks you about this being SP2 and you need SP3 installed on this machine, Win2k3 Server.

It then asks you to install a new instance, ..., and advanced options with a rebuild registry selection available then asks to install client tools only.

Was afraid to install the server again.  I wasn't really wanting to so never selected the Install Database Server on the initial autorun menu.  Doing so now.

I know that registering the sqlmmc.dll did add it at the CLSID of 00100100-1816... but once Enterprise Manager executed it'd come up with an error saying some registry entries were missing and the snap-in error pop-up.  When you looked at the registry again in regedit, the sqlmmc.dll CLSID entry had been removed.

Have to reboot now.  Well it didn't ask me to but am going to since even after the registry repair Enterprise Manager still comes up with the snap-in failed to initialize pop-up.
