AS400/db2 Linked Server

I am trying to create a linked server to an AS400 system by using the OLE DB provider for DB2. Must I set up a Host Integrated Server to establish my provider string, or is there a better and cheaper way to set up this link?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I've had problems with this for sometime and it's driven me nuts. Here's my experience:
Even though the microsoft ole db provider for DB2 shows up in the drop down list in the linked servers dialog, it is not fully installed or usable until you install Host Integration aka HIS. (Why do they display the driver like it should work?)

(I think an HIS selling point is that you get around this? Not sure, it wasn't available to me or I would have gone that route.)
We ended up using the ODBC driver from IBM's DB2 Connect. That product was the only thing available to us that our DB2 admins would configure. It's better than nothing but we had to work through some quirks.
Another alternative is a 3rd party driver like StarSQL. I like the looks of StarSQL but haven't been able to play with it because of the binding issue.
And FYI, when I asked Brian Knight on 9/7/04 what he recommended in regards to StarSQL and/or DB2 connections, this was his response:
"I personally use and like Host Integration Services or DB2 Connect for DB2 connection. HIS seems to be better priced."Good luck!

I successfully used Hit software's OLEDB driver for several years when I needed to interface with the AS400. AS far as I know it is still in use at that company. It did not require any software on the AS400.

I was successful using the OLEDB for ODBC with a DSN set up to use Client Access ODBC Driver.
