sql server 2000 versions

    whats the difference between standard, enterprise, personal, etc etc. I don't know which one to load! (also there's a 64-bit version.. what's that for?!)

    http://www.support.microsoft.com should be able to help you find the differences.  As far as which one you should load depends 100% on what YOU are going to be doing....

    Aside from a little research (on MS and Google), you bank account and managements priorities you might want to ask(or answer) a few additional questions for yourself.

    • Is this your company's first MS/SQL Server ?
    • Does your company have a SQL 'guy' (or 2) ?
    • If you have more than one SQL 'guy' is the other a 'real' DBA ?
    • Are you going to use the WEB with SQL ?
    • If you are using the WEB, do you have the correct infrastructure (DMZ, firewalls, etc) ?
    • Are you using 3 party applications ?
    • Are the applications 2 or 3 tiered ?
    • How about WEB 'guys', Newtork 'guys' ?

    I think the standard comes with less features than the Enterprise edition, the Developer and the Enterprise are the same but you cannot deploy with the developer edition.  And you get the personnal when your employer have several Enterprise editions running on the Network. There is also a Workgroup edition which I have never used.

    And I was a beta one tester of the 64bits version in 2001.  Hope this helps.
