Cannot reinstall MSDE on XP after uninstalled

  • Hi there I have trouble reinstalling MSDE 2000 on a XP machine after uninstalled it. I did apply SP3a to the previous install of MSDE 2000 on the same XP machine. Some of the component in an application did not work well so I had to uninstall the MSDE 2000 SP3a completely. I removed all folders and even registry entries. I kept getting this message, "Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup logs for more information". Unfortunately, those error and setup logs were useless. So, I used the /L*v parameter to generate the setup log but it did not pinpoint why it failed. It always fail at the last 4 seconds install period.I ran the same setup on another XP machine. After uninstalled MSDE, removed folders and registry entries, I was able to reinstall MSDE 2000 again.I also tried using MSIZAP T {ProductCode} suggested in KB320873 article and that didn't help either.I'm running out of idea. What's next? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.KC

  • I've had a similar problem.  The initial install failed, and I was told that the most sure solution was to slick the machine and start over.

MSDE is free, and worth every penny.

  • try this link, i am assuming msde adds reg entries as well:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290991#4

  • All the reg entries in that article do not exist on that XP machine. I was able to dup the issue on another XP machine. I used the same procedure to uninstall, remove and clean up the MSDE installation and it works. I tried few times and I have no issue.

I'm running out of option here...

  • have you tried searching the registry?

  • Well. Sometimes when you uninstall some MSDE intance the actual MSDE engine remains installed on the machine. Also, and most of the times i've tried, the database and log files remain in the actual instance directory. This is, uninstalling MSDE will only remove the instance declaration/registry. Usualy I detach all databases and log files from the actual instance before uninstalling it - this way I'll prevent any further problems with the registry and with some confusing method that MSDE uses to register it's own components. In your case, since(I think) you didn't detach the db(s), you'll probably having problems with the remains of the specific instance you're trying to reinstall(I believe they have the same name). If both instances(the one you've uninstalled and the new one) have the same name, try and search for the physical path of the db files - mainly «master.mdf» - that can be keeping the references to some objects that don't exist anymore - it conflics and doesn't move - try and erase any instance or working directory of the MSDE engine after you uninstall it and only after everything is completly removed from your machine then try and reinstall the instance.

  • yes, I did search the registry. Nothing associated with MSSQL / SQL / Microsoft SQL was found. For the instance / working directory, I already removed them manually after uninstalled at the first time.
