Low Bandwidth

  • Hi guy/Gals,

This is My First Post to this forum. I did not know where exactly I should have posted it so please forgive me if i am in the wrong forum. I am developing a client server app that will have SQL 2k as a database server. I need to emulate a low bandwidth enviroment on the test platform in our office to see how the application will perform when deployed since it will run on a WAN whose bandwidth cannot be guaranteed. What i need to find out is how to emulate a low bandwidth on the developement enviroment. My SQL Server is running Win2K Server and the clients are running on WinXP Pro with a 100Mbps network. Is it possible to emulate a low bandwidth network????

    Help

  • There are a couple of possibilities, but they require hardware.

    1. Look in the "old equipment" closet and see if there is a 10MB hub.  If so, connect several of the client PCs to the network via he hub and have them all access the server simutaneously.

    2. Get a copy of the Microtik router software (eval license is free, full license is $45) and an old PC with two network cards.  The software can limit bandwidth by device to 64KB, 128KB, etc.

  • I have used this before and its very simple to use and is relatively inexpensive.

If you just need it for testing - you might get away with just using the evaluation version.

  • Hay guys Thanks for the pointers will give them a try and get back to the forum on what really worked for me
