client tools only version number and patching

  How can you determine the version of the "client tools only" install. I know that the @@VERSION works for Enterprise, Standard and MSDE but the client tools only install doesn't have have a database to run the query on. How can this information be extracted from the registry.

  Also I am wondering about patching of client tools only installs, do they need patching. I presume so but I haven't read anything that specifically says so for the client tools.

  I suppose you can get the version number of the client tools by using the help --> about options from the menu of the client tool.

  As for the patching, I haven't heard anything myself but the other guru's might be able to shed some light.
