SQL Clusters and Analysis Services DSO

  • Greetings,

Although this may relate to Analysis Services, I think it may be better answered by a SQL Server Administrator guru. However, let me know if I should post this on the Data Warehousing forum instead. I didn't want to cross post.

I have a need to run Analysis Services on a single Server instance, but obtaining its data from a SQL Server Cluster. I gather Analysis Services is not designed to work within a SQL Cluster. However, the Analysis Services instance outside the SQL Cluster will need to communicate with the appropriate SQL Server maintained data within that cluster.

Does anyone know if there are any problems with installing the Decision Support Objects (DSO) within a SQL Cluster?

If this configuration does work, are there any issues that I would need to consider?

I do need Analysis Services to also integrate with an IIS based we application and I know that there are no issues with having DSO installed on that box.

Any constructive feedback would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  • There is no issue with retreiving data from a clusterered SQL server when Analysis services is installed on another server, I have recently had to do the very same thing. Analysis services sees the cluster as just 1 instance and is qiute happy using it as a data source. Unfortunately I have no idea about the DSO query you have. Hope this helps

  • Thanks Andrew,

At least that is a step on the right direction. Knowing that Analysis Services installed on its own box and pointing to a SQL Server Cluster works is very comforting.

The DSO's piece is important to me as the IIS based web application needs to be able to communicate with both the SQL Server Clustered databases and the separate Analysis Services instance.

In a non-clustered SQL Server environment, DSO would be installed on the SQL Server box, the Analysis Server box and the IIS box. It is the installation of DSO within a SQL Server Cluster that has me concerned. I have no indications from what I know of DSO and based on what I have read about SQL Clustering that this would be an issue.

At the moment, I am just try to confirm that my thoughts are correct in that there should be no issues. Addtionally, it would be good to find out if DSO needs to be installed on just Node1 of the SQL Server Cluster or on all Nodes.

I trust this clarifies my situation.

    Cheers,

  • Check this article. Describes about installing Analysis service on Windows 2000/2003 cluster.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reference to this MS Article. However, I have already read through this article and while it describes in detail how to set up the "not cluster aware" Analysis Services in a SQL Server Cluster, my intention is to run Analysis Services outside of the cluster.

This being the case, I need to know the consequences of just loading up the Decision Support Objects (DSO), within the SQL Server Cluster (Node1 or all Nodes) for communication purposes between the IIS Server, Analysis Services Server and the SQL Server Cluster.

    Cheers,

    Wayne
