General Network Error with Backups

  • I am running SQL 2k Standard SP3a on a Wk3 Server.  Fri. I restarted my SQL Server with Service Manager and today I started SQL Server Agent (Cause I forgot to start if after the Server restart! DOH!). None of my scheduled backup or translog backups will succeed anymore except sys. database's to the local drive or if I run them through QA they succeed.     This is the error I get when backing up the non-sys database:

Connection (Wrapper/Read()).(SQLSTATE 01000) (Message 258) General Network Error. Check your network documentation. (SQLSTATE 08S01) (Error 11) 10 Percent backed up. (SQLSTATE 01000) (Error 3211). The step failed.

All jobs are to either local or remote server hard disks. These jobs have run for months with no problem.

I have read about MS hotfix for MDAC 2.8 KB 827452. I want to shutdown/restart my server to see if that fixes it first but I need to wait till tomorrow morning. Any ideas why I can only backup the sys databases to the local drive and all jobs through QA?? Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks!

  • Check to see that backups to remote servers are still allowed. In other words, has anyone changed permissions to stop backups to the remote servers!

    Kindest Regards,

  • Thanks Trigger for your reply. I am a one man IT Dept and nothing has changed. I only restarted the server service and then started the agent. Then all jobs failed except those I listed in the first post.

  • OK, I had a chance to reboot the whole server this morning. So far so good everything is back to normal. (Glad I waited before installing a hotfix for MDAC 2.8. like MS suggested.)
