Adding Functionality to Windows Explorer?

  • Hello,

Does someone know how to add functionality to Windows Explorer? I have several scripts that I want to be available through the menu or a toolbar. Moreover, it would be nice if those scripts would be aware of the current folder. Like I have a script to return Folder Sizes. Windows Explorer shows only file sizes. It is helpful to a DBA to see what are the Data folders sizes or usder shares sizes without having to open properties of each folder. Or I would like to open Command Prompt from the Explorer so it would open on the current directory.

I do know and use Add/Remove Snap-in for MMC, but explorer is not a snap-in.

I also know how to customize customize a toolbar, but I can only select from available buttons. Maybe someone knows how I can add a button to the list that will call my program?

View-Choose Details may add more fields to details. It is not mean.

I can run cmd <myfolderpath> to open cmd in the particular folder, but again, I would like to do it from the Explorer.

    Any advice?

I'd check more on programming Windows sites instead of here. Mostly SQL Server guys here, not as many programmers.

  • Steve, thanks!

The program in the article you pointed to uses Windows Shell Extensions. This looks like what I need. I have to read more on that.
