SQL 2000 Installation problem

    I am trying to install SQL 2000 (original version) on my new Dell 2 cpu 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 Xeon server with 2Gig memory.  This server has Win 2000 sp4 installed. Unfortunataly it is not going any where after couple of starting screens.  I have installed SQL 2000 on many-many occasions but (not this type of hardware though) never experienced this kind of problem before.  Does anybody on this forum have similar experience before or know if there is any known bug which I am not aware of?  Any help/suggestion is really appreciated.

    Check SQL Server installation log sqlstp.log at c:\winnt directory.

    File is not even there.  I searched my whole hard drive.  I think it is not even going that far.

    It doen't seems like that it is failed.  Setup file is still running when I check the processes from the task manager.  It just doen't repond back after couple of screens.  It seems like it is not doing any thing.  And this is a very good quality server and no application is running in the backgroind either. CPU level is almost zero.  Its hard to tell whats going on in the background.

    Have you tried to reboot the server and restart the installation?

    Thanks Allen for all the replies so far (and forgive me for the typo..)

    I rebooted the machine several times.  As a matter of fact I restarted the setup again and to me it seems like it is going very-very slow.  This time I am few steps forward but it is ridiculously slow from one screen to another.  Right now it is on 'Setup MDAC installation ....' for last 30 minutes.

    I absolutely have no idea why it is too slow...

    No error in event log.  Finally I am able to install the SQL server, but it was very-very slow.  I checked the sqlstp.log file and there is no error.  Now I am trying to install the SP3 but it is exactly the same way, extremly slow.  Do you think there may be something related with OS setup or any hardware related issue.

    Could be hardware. What is the currently load in Task Manager and shutdown any services such as Virus Scan while installing and those you don't expressly need that are eating CPU time. Could be you have a virus or some spyware. If you cannot find an issue go out to Symantecs website and run the online virsu scanner which is free to see if anything turns up.

    I can't provide any advice, but I did have the same problem recently on a new server.  Different hardware, but same OS.  After a hard reboot, installation went fine, although I'm still having issues with the machine.

    I used 3 different way to install, using mapped drive, from the CD and copying the CD on the local hard drive.  All have the exactly same effect.  I had the exact same problem installing the SP3.  It is finally installed now but installation took way to long compare to the experince I had in the past.

    I fear you will have problems with this system down the line, you should do some hardware diags on it and see if there isn't a raid controller issue, or possibly something gone bad with the OS. I would suggest you do this before putting it into production (if is not already too late). I have been burned before by getting a machine to limp along for a while only to die 3 weeks after its gone "live".

    You should check your hard disk drive / RAID configuration. Make sure that you have no conflicts in the Device Manager.
