Depends on what you are trying to do. Visio, and Erwin allow you to create a pretty graphical representation, and even generate the DB or scripts to create the DB.
I like to prototype in Access, then scale it up. This works well as you can use the DB while you design, it is more portable than a SQL DB, and you can easily create forms to enter data as you test your design. Once the design is done I document it with Visio or Erwin, though.

Embarcadero ER Studio is awesome if you can afford to spend the $3k on a data modeling tool. I tried Erwin, and Powerbuilder as well, but didn't like those nearly as much.
Unfortunately, my company didn't want to cough up the money for decent software, so I'm stuck using visio professional to reverse engineer my databases.
You are trying to design a data model, right?

- Trust me -
CA-ERwin is NOT THE TOOL for you
When LogicWorks owned the product, it was dynamite. When Platinum took over, it was still a good tool. CA has made every effort to kill the product's reputation - very successfully, I might add.
We still use it, but there are so may bugs in it that theres too much effort involved.

Good to know, and thanks for sharing. Yeah, ERwin always seemed like crap to me. If you're going to pay a lot of money anyway, ER Studio is probably the way to go.

We use the diagramming tool in SS2K itself. Though admittedly not portable, even between identical databases.
