Alternate backup media

  • Hi everyone,

I am looking for alternative to backup tapes and DVDs as backup or rather archiving media. Does anyone have any ideas of some other technologies? Thanks.

  • For data storage you basically have two broad choices; magnetic or optical storage.  There are some new technologies using high density optical storage that are in development, but generally speaking, magnetic storage is more cost efficient (at least for now).  Of the magnetic storage media, tape is the most cost efficient, but slowest.  Which is why it is the overwhelming choice for archival purposes.

So the short answer is no, there really are no cost effective alternatives to tape for now.

  • With retail flash drives in the 4GB range right now, is there any talk of EEPROM devices suitable for this purpose? Data retention sits at about 10 years, so given the price point, it seems to be a resonable candidate.

  • You could always use a few of these

  • Thanks for reinforcing my point about cost effectiveness!
