Win2k3 Server with SQL Server rebooting by itself

  • We have a dell 4cpu with win2k3 and sql server enterprise edition on it. This server had been running since June and suddenly yesterday started rebooting by itself (happened twice). There is no indication in the event log of a problem. I run a trace on this server all the time and there was no appearance of anything bad. Also nothing in the sql server errorlog.

We had dell hardware support come out and run diagnostics last night - everything checked out ok. So could the problem be sql server somewhere. Anyone experienced this or have advice on what to check to see what is causing the problem.

    Thanks

  • My company also bought the DELL 4cpu with HyperThread and before we change all our SQL servers to dell, I evaulated one server and did the load testing and happend the same. There is no trace of or any reason about why server rebooted (sometimes every day and some time once a weeek and some times 14 days after) I wokred w/ Dell support team for a month running diagnostics and all other stuff but all says good. So we changed all the parts (cpu, memeory, memeory boards, pci boards, etc) and all good so far after that.

One thing we didn't test was if it was related to Win2k3 with AWE option (we had 16G ram) and make H/W unstable...

One good thing is that DELL support team was very helpful and active but it would have been nicer if they exchange the box w/ new box. So that I didn't have to spend over a month to troubleshooting all that...

    I wish you luck!

  • Try replacing all the hardware parts and hope that helps.

We had issues where the server would reboot because of a bad raid controller card but the Dell diagnostics ran fine.
