Hello.
I'm interested in any comparisons/recommendations for free or inexpensive SQL tools to be used with MSDE. Basically what I'm looking for is a package that most closely mirrors Enterprise Mgr. and Query Analyzer without the big ticket cost (DTS is one consideration that we have). I've looked at the MS partners recommendations found on http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/default.asp
and wanted to know what other folks have experienced.
Thank you very much for your help.

It's been a while since I did this, but I think it still works:
- Download a trial version of the full SQL Server product from Microsoft.
- Choose Custom Install, and install the Enterprise Manager and Query Analyser tools
That's it. They don't expire. And they work with MSDE.

I found a reference for you, from the moderator of the WROX forum:
"You can download trial version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 from the following URL
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/trial/default.asp
Install it on client machine such as windows 2000 professional and setup will install only client tools, so you can use Enterprise manager for all management related issues. "

I found it through Google. URL is: http://p2p.wrox.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5657

Just a note though.
I don't think that approach is legal, you have to OWN a copy of the full SQL product to use EM etc against MSDE. Or whatever the new, less confusing name is.

Buy the developer version of SQLserver (I think it is $45) and you have a legal version to use with MSDE.
