Double Take?

  • Has anyone used "Double Take" http://www.lyonware.co.uk/DoubleTake/DoubleTake.htm

I'd like to know anythings that I need to know before I start evaluate that product.

    Thank you,

  • I'm not very familiar with Double-Take but I believe it is an implementation of snapshot technology.

Snapshot technology as a whole is fantastic for high availability and for instantaneous backups, however it has several drawbacks.

    1) $$$Expensive$$$, not only in the upfront cost but the cost of maintaining huge amounts of storage and maintaining that storage over the years as your databases grow.

    2) Still need an archiving solution for taking backups off to tape.

    3) Re-mirroring process can take a very long time.  If a problem happens during remirroring, several bad things could happen causing tlogs to fill up and/or other jobs to fail.

Snapshot technology is a great solution for a very specific need however it should not be thought of as a cure-all in the DR/backup and recovery space.

  • Thank you for the input. I will keep in mind that.

  • We use it here quite a bit. But as for database replication, we only use it for one sql server for DR purposes. As I understand it , it works at the disk level. On the target machine the sql services will be stopped or the database(s) you are replicating must be detatched.

  • That is very good to know. Do you know if it requires any resource from Source DB?

    Thank you in advance,

    Kun
