I've been having full text indexing problems on our sandbox database, so I figured I'd just start from scratch. I uninstalled SQL Server. No prob. As I'm re-installing, I get to the "instance" screen and the default checkbox is greyed out (disabled). It's forcing me to create a named instance. I don't want this. I can't find any evidence of another SQL instance. I don't think MSDE is installed. How do I clear all SQL Server instances??
Would very much appreciate any pointers. I'm under the gun on this.
update: It seems to recognize another instance and starts to let me uninstall, but immediately upon seeing the "uninstalling files. please wait" screen, this message pops up: "Uninstall failed. Could not obtain uninstall command from registry for Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

hm let me ask you a set of questions first.
1. What operating system do you have for your server?
2. What sql version did you previously have.?
I know that if you try to uninstall sql 2000 from window 2003, you actually have to reformat the disk and reinstall window 2003 before you can put something else in there.
On windows 2000 server, you can reboot your server, uninstall sql server, reboot it again after uninstall. After this, you could go and clean out all directory under program files/microsoft/sql server and delete all registry related to sql server. After you delete, I would recommend another reboot. You then would be able to do a clean install of sql 2000.
Good luck.
