Using mssqlXpress Good or Bad

  • Anyone heard of a third party tool called mssqlXpress? (www.mssqlXpress.com) Is it any good? It replaces EM and QA. What do you think of using NON-Microsoft software to develop stored procedures?

  • Hi,

I evaluate 3rd party software tools all the time. My theory is "Why re-invent the wheel?" But I do recommend the following:

*Always load demo software on test environments.

    *Test on your local box.

*Only download software product/demos from reputable companies.

Remember some software's can have compatibility issues. Or worse yet, bugs that haven't been detected. That's why a test environment is always the way to go. Some tools can literally save hours of work, so they may be worth a look. This forum is an excellent place to get opinions. I personally have not evaluated mssqlXpress, but have heard of it before. I hope this helps.

  • Hi robinhc,

I tested it earlier this year. I will admit that it has some nice features. I would not call it a complete replacement for EM and QA. It did provide some nice features for integrating with Visual Source Safe though.

I haven't looked at it in the past few months so I don't know if they fixed some of the things I didn't like about it.

If you're looking for a tool that gives you what EM and QA do in one package I am currently looking at Database Workbench from http://www.upscene.com/. It seems to have promise.

I can like a person. People are arrogant, ignorant, idiotic, irritating and mostly just plain annoying.
