MSDE Install Problem

  • I am trying to install MSDE Release A on my Windows 2000 Server test box, and it keeps giving me an Invalid Named Instance error. Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

Are you performing an upgrade or a fresh install?

Because this problem seems to be known when upgrading to SP3

The solution when you upgrade a default (unnamed) instance, the correct command line is "setup /upgradesp sqlrun"

If you are upgrading a named instance specify INSTANCENAME= on

    the command line as well.

More information about the syntax can be found in the "SP3README.HTM" file

    Hope this helps you

  • I had SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition on this box, with SP3. I uninstalled SQL Server and was trying to install MSDE instead, but I do not think I ever uninstalled SP3?

If the machine DOES NOT have SP3 on it, should I still have this problem?

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • Did you uninstall all instances? Do you have Client tools that you installed after you uninstalled Enterprise? You don't have an option for the Default instance for example if no server is installed but onl;y client tools are installed. I sometimes see this problem.

Moreover, yesterday I had it while trying to install Developer edition to a developer on her workstation. We had then to uninstall Cieent tools. Rebooted. Then when we tried to install Developer, MDAC install failed, so all install failed. She turned the computer off for the night, restarted it today and the install is fine.

I would suggest, first look at the registry and manually clean up the previous install after the automated uninstall, reboot a couple of times, check the name of the new instance so it would be of the appropriate spelling and let us know how it is going
