HI. I'm about to take the dive and JUST DO IT, install service pack 3 on our test server ! From reading the readme doc, i have backed up both my system and user databases. I will stop all the sql services and it appears i just run the setup.bat script from the directory where i dowloaded the service pack. Am i missing some steps or 'should' it be this easy???
I"ve never applied a service pack before so i'm a little nervous

This is about it. Make sure you stop all unneccessary services on your server also. SP3 is more fussy about this... IIS, Antivirus, Compaq/Dell svc, SMTP WW Web.....
The first time I installed SP3 it was at the end but never would finish... I found a couple of services that I missed, stopped them and the service pack install finished.

Thanks a bunch. I did the install and it went fine. But I'm glad you mentioned about the other services. I will make sure to turn those off in our production upgrade. Just out of curiousity, Can I apply service pack 3 to a sql server that is running service pack 2 without all those slammer virus patches? I know it sounds like an off the wall question.

Yes you can. You really should be a SP3a already though.. has lots of fixes and lots of security patches... There is another release above SP3a that fixes even more stuff MS03-031 I think... its 8.00.818 hotfix. You have to have SP3 already installed on it to put this on. You really should have this on all SQL Servers too.....
