Hi,
Does anyone have any SQL server running on a DELL high end server which use fiber to connect to a subsystem (SAN). ? I am just wondering how good or bad is for Dell's high end server. We have been using Compaq for our server and SAN but due to costs, we may be interested in DELL.
Also is it true that Compaq doesn't focus on small to medium customers any more? I like to know some opinions out there before we make our decision.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

First, I believe COMPAQ was bought out by HP so I'm not sure where their focus is these days.
I run DELL PowerEdge 8450's and use SANs. My systems are up 24/7. We used to use the 662/224 for SANs, but now use the DELL/EMC2 system. The DELL 662/224's did cause a crash when a raid controller went bad. I haven't had any problems and my systems are 24/7.

We've got Compaq / HP SANs running here with both Compaq and IBM servers connected to them. Some with local storage some without.
In the last 9 months, we've had lots of hardware replaced, some outages, mostly from upgrades, but overall I haven't been thrilled with the SAN technology.
Can't speak to or for DELL.

Ok, no DELL SAN here but out of 5 PowerEdge servers we have had issues with 2. One had a motherboard go out, the other had a bad harddrive which took a week to replace and was the wrong part which the correct took almost another week (this was on our RAID). But on the other hand DELL desktops out of hundreds we have had few problems (hard drive and a few keyboards that I know of and a few other grumbles I don't recall).
HP and COMPAQs have been about the same but all in all I think it is the quality of the equipment they use on some of the lower cost items (many are off brands or refurbished items) check with them on the details of the equipment and get a good agreement in your contract. In our case we had a 4 hour turn around but in both cases they failed, but unfortunenately I don't think the folks in charge did anything about the breach in contract (but I don't know for sure).

Thanks for all the information for everyone. You mentioned that 2 out of 5 PowerEdge have had issues. I like to know how soon the issues came up after you purchased them.
Also, as far as I know, Dell seriously wanted to challenge the server market just recently ( past ~ 2 or 3 years), will they be any good compared to other well established and high quality server /SAN brand such compaq/HP. Will they stay and survive in the server/SAN market for a long run?

The motherboard issue showed up within 6 months. The hard drive 2 years. Fortunately we had a 3 year onsite warranty.
