Master Console (MSX)

  • I don't find a lot of information on Master Console usage and enterprise-level automation of all SQL Servers. I'm used to managing around 100+ servers and I find MC the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm interested in hearing reasons on why and how you use MC in your environments, or why you don't use it.

    Thanks,

  • Do you mean the MMC snap-in?

I like it, mostly. I think the management tools for SQL Server have improved with each revision -- anyone remember the pain that was administering SQL Server 4.whatever? Bleah. 6.5 was a vast improvement.

I do have some gripes with the MMC, though -- I quite regularly get run-time errors while populating the "Task" view for a database, and I also dislike the response times, and I've only got a dozen or so servers!

  • The plug-in is much better than the 6.5. But I meant Multi-Server Administration option. In 7.0, it was called Master Console. Not a lot of people seem to use it. MSX and TSX might ring their bells though.

  • I use it to manage all of my routine "monitoring" jobs. (backups, space check,...). I find it works well once you've successfully registered a TSX. Finding out why a TSX will not register is very difficult. There is very little information available and MS has implemented a nebulous 22026 error code for nearly all registration problems.
