Hi Experts,
Sql server 2k sp3a with Win2k
I am planning to use Transactional replication for making subscriber as a reporting server of the OLTP database.
I want to know wether it is a good descision to go for transactional replication for reporting server,as our reports are integrated in J2EE based systems and require to print almost real time as the data commited into the database.
Also i am expecting this will reduce locking on publisher due to no read locks of reports, and improve overall performance.
Is there any issues related to locking at Transactional subscriber and what is the locking mechanism at time time of posting data at subscriber ?
TIA

You might consider log shipping if you are using this for a reporting server. I believe it creates less of a load on the publishing server.

You might consider placing the distributor on a separate server, or even in the subscriber.
But to minimize workload, you shoudn't create the distributor on the publisher.

Racosta is right on the distributor, but I'd add that I run the distributor on the publisher with good success. Really just depends on the volume plus the hardware plus other load.

When we started to replication it was OK, to run the distributor on the publisher. In fact we are still doing it. But in a near future I will change the distributor location to a new server because I almost have 100 subscribers, and I will reduce the workload a lot separating the server.
As Andy said, it depends on the workload. But planning ahead it is necesary too.
