Hi guys
I have a question a shown below:
"Give an imaginative and practical example of the use of some important GIS functionality that could be used within a transport information system"
The SQL Server database simply holds data about routes between specific locations. Any ideas where I an find specific help on this? this is something ive never looked into before so a pointer in the right direction would be handy
Cheers

Thanks, possibly a bit vague, may need something a bit more general, i.e. a solution which covers databases in general rather than just an sql server solution.
Has some basic ideas though..

Being a GIS DBA now for 15 years There are two industry leaders I would recommend:
http://www.esri.com. Database product called Spatial Database Engine (SDE)
Most of my recent expreience has been with ESRI. The product is solid and there are numerous API env's to analysis.
http://www.intergraph.com. They use Oracle Sptial Data Cartridge. Probably not an option for you as a SQL Server user.

Thanks for that.
Do you have any references for some informative sites, i.e. just some basics to get me going. im not actually implementing this practically, its more of a theoretical question.....

You will find lots of examples using ESRI software here. http://www.esricanada.com/english/transportation/default.asp
There are several links to case studies and ESRI technical material.
If you are looking for a more "imaginative and practical example" try http://www.nena.org/index.htm. There are several papers on the use of GIS in 9-1-1. Specifically http://www.nena.org/bpc%20final%20track%20notes/w%20nena%20gis%20white%20paper%2D%20final.doc
Good luck
