One to watch.
If for any reason you have tables or stored procedures in the MSDB database which are NOT owned by dbo. The upgrade fails on script (4/9) ie 80sp3-tools.sql .
Changing the ownership on these objects did resolve the problem for me.

Cool. Nothing quite as fun as watching a service pack fail - instant thoughts of "I'll be here all night!".

At least when it is the script part that falls over you can view the log file and the script. Then run it bit by bit in QA and manually to troubleshoot the problem.
(Then rerun the complete service pack after, to ensure its installed correctly)
