Licensing Questions

  • I am currently running SQL Server 7 w/ 2 per processor license and I am looking to upgrade to SQL Server 2000. The issue is $$ for per processor now is a large investment and I am not sure if I truely need per processor licnsing or if I can more to per cal. Ok now for the actual question. If I switch to SQL Server 2000 w/ 25 cal. What happens when I hit 26 active connections? Do 25 cals actually stop you when you hit you license limit. The reason I ask is I dont think I would be topping out 25 connections but if I do will it stop the connections?

  • The 26th connection would be denied.

Microsoft has more licensing plans than just that. I suggest contacting their licensing people. Maybe the SPLA program is for you. Instead of paying one huge chunk for licensing, you pay a monthly fee based on the number of people that are actually using it. You may end up paying $10 or $15 per month.
