Its worth doing, even if you just install on your workstation and dont have a full test environment. The more you test across more hardware/software combo's, less chance of a bad sp. If you participate be sure to include your betaid in any newgroup postings. They usually give away some books and stuff to random participants.

Microsoft has been very good about the stability of their last two SQL Server service pack betas. Both SQL Server 2000 SP2 Beta and SQL Server 7 SP4 Beta were pretty good with only minor issues before release.
