Problem installing SQL Server on XP

    Can anyone help with this problem?

    I get an error when trying to install SQL Server 2000 Developer on Windows XP Pro.

    I select "Use the same account for each service. Auto-start SQL Server Service" and "Use a Domain User account".

    This produces the message: "The logon account cannot be validated for the SQL Server Service. Verify that the username and password entered are correct. The logon attempt failed."

    I am using an account with administrator rights (not the administrator account itself - although I have tried installing it on the main administrator account, with the same result).

    The username and password are correct.

    If I choose the option "use the local system account", installation appears to continue ok. However, I really want to install it using the domain user account.

    (I have already installed this same copy of SQL Server on a Windows 2000 machine with 'use Domain User account' option, no problem.)

    Any suggestions..?

    Have you tried specifying the domain username in the format DOMAIN\USERNAME?

    Are you using a Domain account from a domain which does not include your machine and does not trust your machine. In that case the account can not be validated.

    Make sure Print and File Sharing is enabled.

    Thanks. I've checked out print and file sharing, and have also tried entering the domain in the format domain\username - to no avail.

    I'm not sure about the domain not trusting my machine - it's my home practice machine which is not (yet) part of any network.

    I've installed SQL Server anyway with the 'local system account' option. I tried to change this (Enterprise Manager > local properties) after installation but with the same problem - 'unknown account'.

    I you work on a stand alone machine, trust does not apply and neither does the domain\username format. The domain is the machine name.

    What happens is you try to change the login user in services?

    Can it be that a personal firewall interferes?

    A really dumb question: Have you tried to login to XP with that user and password?

    Yes, the machine name and domain name are one and the same. When I try to change the startup service account, I've tried a couple of different combinations (domain\username, username, DOMAIN\username etc etc) but it doesn't recognise it.

    I've also tried leaving the domain as 'LocalSystem' or 'LocalSystem\username', which it seems to accept. But when I restart and check the settings, they've cleared themselves.

    Yes, I log in regularly using this domain name and password, which has full administrator rights. I've also tried installing it under the Administrator itself which I think I've mentioned.

    I've also tried all this with the firewall closed down.

    Did you check the Event Viewer logs. Many messages have additional details that can be found here. May not but always check there.
