Q316333 - confused

  • I'm a new DBA and need more understanding of applying Microsoft Hotfixes.

    When viewing the download page( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316333 )for this fix, there are 3 releases (July 10, 2002 - April 17, 2002 - February 20, 2002) each with a separate download for the indicated fixes(Q322853, Q319507 and Q317979).

    Do all 3 of these files need to be downloaded and applied?

    If so, in what order? I thought the July file would take care of the entire issue but the other 2 files appearing on that page confuses me.

    Lastly, when running the Network Security Hotfix Checker on SQL2K SP2 servers, it seems to list the Q316333 issue as resolved, but then again, I may not be reading it's

    output correctly. It's output is pasted at the bottom of this post.

    My thanks in advance for anyone willing to spend their valuable time in responding to this.

  • If you apply Q322853 you should be all set. Read the following from the page (I usually gloss over this but if you read it carefully it makes sense);

    Microsoft distributes SQL Server 2000 security fixes as one downloadable file. Because the security fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all of the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 security fix release. You do not have to install a previous patch before you install the latest one. This Microsoft Knowledge Base article contains a list of all the security fixes that are available for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

    As for the odd reporting with "Hotfix Checker", I don't know but my guess is it will clear when you run the update.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for clarifying that for me, David.

    I'm still second guessing alot of decisions at this stage of my game. (Of course, I'll apply the patch to a test box first).

    This is greatly appreciated.
