Complete List of SQL Server Data Types

  • Okay, I've spent over an hour looking for a comprehensive listing of all SQL Server 7.0 (or higher) data types and a description of each one (such as limitations, specs etc.). Where are they?! It seems I would be able to find a nice, complete table somehwere for reference sake, but I've been unsuccessful in over an hour. I've searched the Web in general using Google and Lycos, all of Microsoft.com's sites and even a few SQL Server books! Please help if you can refer me to a good source. I give up for now. 🙂

  • BOL has some info, search for Data Types, then pick described under it in the index.

  • Am I the only ONE that doesn't know what "BOL" means? (sorry -- I'm new here) Is it a website? A store? I've tried BOL.COM and BOOKSONLINE.COM, but neither seem to fit the description of what I should be looking for. I use to consider myself resourceful, but today... I guess today is just NOT my day. Any further help or clarification will be appreciated.

  • Sorry for the lack of clarity, its Books Online, the standard SQL help file.

  • I recently posted a topic on FAQ "How can I quickly get information of the built in or user-defined data types in the database?" -

  • Thanks, guys!

I'm always wondering why this and a lot of other very useful stored procs are undocumented, what is wrong with puting info in BOL?

  • Is MS frightened of not revealing SPs codes? 😉

Then better they encrypt them. Whats your opinion!

  • Not sure they have a problem with letting people know what they do as you can find a few not documented in BOL on the KB site. More likely they just build these with a specific need for products like EM to use and don't consider the bennefits to other people.
