run status of job displayed incorrectly?

  • hi,

one of the jobs (log-reader agent) is displaying the 'error icon' but the log-reader is running correctly. we had an unexpected shutdown a few days ago after which the agent reported an error. what i do not understand is why is it still reporting that error run status? is there any way to set this right? i already deleted all of the job-history but that didn't help. i want to try stop and restart the job but i'm not sure if this will affect the (transactional) replication? i would be grateful for any advice, thank you.

  • It's behaving correctly. The job status won't change until the log reader completes, so it will continue to show as failed until the next time you stop/start the job. Doing so now will not hurt anything. All transactions stay in the log until cleared by the log reader, so the worst that happens is a min or so of transactions pile up.

  • Andy is right, the icon only represents the last run comoletetion state. So when it fails it will turn red, but a running log-reader will never change the icon so it has not effect on the process. If you stop the process it will report last run success and the icon wil change. Restart it and will remain that way until another failure, at which time the icon is red and it will be running again. The key is the icon is based on last run completetion not current run state.

  • thank you for your reply - i have folowed your advice and stopped/restarted the job and as there was no error - the icon is signalling 'ok'. i still think that this is very confusing as microsoft clearly stated that the icon is presenting the run-status. when everything is running smoothly - no matter how the job history looks like - i would expect it to display this.

Yeah, it is one of those technical terms that yells, wish I had a spell checker built into this box. Of course had I had one the word have been different more like, completion.
